THe earthquake and ensuing tsunami is estimated to have cost 16 - 25 trillion yen which would make it the costliest natural disaster in history. As a result of the destruction of key infrastructure such as factories and oil refineries, industrial production had decreased. This was damaging to Japan as it is a country that relies on its exports to survive. This has also affected other economies around the world that rely on Japan's exports. As a result of the shutdown of several nuclear plants such as the one in Fukushima, the Japanese government has been forced to increase their oil imports to make sure they have a stable power supply.

As a result of the nuclear meltdown seen in the Fukushima nuclear power plant, there has been a growing movement to ban nuclear power in Japan. Many people also fear that the whole Fukushima are has been affected by leaking nuclear radiation. As of 2013 there are still many people who have been displaced as a result of either the earthquake, tsunami or ensuing nuclear meltdown in Fukushima. 754 culturally significant buildings were damaged including some of Japan's so-called national treasures.

There have also been signs that the waters around Fukushima have been affected by nuclear radiation. There has also been some evidence that minimal amounts have been traced throughout the pacific ocean. This earthquake gas also caused the islans of japan to move significantly i.e. the island of Honshu was moved 2.4 metres east. This has caused changes in tidal behaviour.
