LEss economically developed countries (LEDC's):
LEDC's have many rural villages that aren't built to withstand any sort of natural disaster. When an LEDC goes through a period of growth it can cause urbanisation on dangerous and sometimes cramped pieces of land. Medical and emergency services will be less well funded and sometimes Search and Rescue doesn't have the skills necessary for a natural disaster like an eruption or earthquake. There is likely to be no education about how to deal with a diaster and no lessons on how to prepare for one. Transport and means of communication will be much more easily affected by the earthquake or volcano, many people may not have access to information on vital things like evacuation. There probably won't be enough resources to sustain a large amount of people. It may take some time to restore these resources for general use. NO form of monitoring because of not enough money.
More economically deloped countres (MEDC's):
Unlike LEDC's, MEDC's have much less damage done to them from earthquakes and vocanoes. For a country to be an MEDC, it must have enough money to have a successuful economy and trade with the rest of the world. MEDC's, having more money, therefore have more earthquake-resistant buildings compared to LEDC's. For example, a modern building in an MEDC would include shock abosorbers under it, and a movable block on top, which can be controlled by computers to shift in the event of an earthquake, stabalising the building. Education is much better in MEDC's than LEDC's, in some MEDC's education is even compulsory! This would mean that people living in these areas are more educated about what to do in the event of a natural disaster, would have evacuation plans from their houses or schools, and would alsohave supplies at the ready fin the case of a disaster. Transport is also more available in MEDC's meaning most people would have no trouble at all of evacuating an area.
Case studies comparison:
An MEDC's stronger preparation for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, compared to LEDC's, is very evident from the impacts of these natural disasters. For example, there were 847 deaths from the Mount Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines (an LEDC), while there were no deaths at all from the Mount Eldfell eruption in Iceland (an MEDC). While the Mount Pinatubo eruption was more serious than Mount Edfell's, and more people were at risk of dying, the island of Heimaey, Iceland, had an evacuation plan in place, and when Mount Eldfell erupted without any warning, nearly the whole island was evacuated within six hours of the eruption. This contradicts how, Mount Pinatubo, several days before the eruption, had been predicted to erupt when it did, yet, despite the warning, more people died from it. This would suggest the LEDC's lack of either education of the impacts of volcanoes, as many people may have ignored the warnings, or lack of transport to evacuate.
Furthermore, MEDC's have had more immediate action to prevent damage from these natural disasters. For example, when the Tohoku earthquake struck Japan in 2011, the whole developed world knew about it within minutes. Action, was, therefore, immediate, and many lives were saved. When the 1998 Afghanistan earthquakes occured, however, there were no means of communication, and the country's capitol did not even have a clue of the earthquake until three days after. Therefore, by the time rescue teams and medical services had arrived at the site of the earthquake, many lives had allready bbeen lost.
