Plate Tectonics:
Plate Tectonics is the theory that the earth is made up of several plates that make up the crust of the earth and move over a large area of magma called the mantle like an iceberg in the ocean. This the originates from the theory of continental drift which suggest that there used to be one big continent that has slowly broken apart as a result of activity in the plate boundaries. These plates converge in plate boundaries where they come into contact with each other and cause geographical features such as earthquakes and volcanoes. There are two types of plates, oceanic and continental, oceanic is the denser and older of the two. These plates move as a result of convection currents; these is when the magma from the mantle rise as they become less dense than the rocks found in the upper mantle and crust and sinks, resulting in a repetitive, circular motion. This movement creates convection cells that theoretically allow for these plates to move. There are several types of plate boundaries that create different geographical features like how a collision margin creates fold mountains such as those that can be seen in the himalayas.
